Have You Heard Of Thieves Oil?

Thieves Oil is an essential oil blend based on a recipe from around the 15th century. It was said that when the bubonic plague was sweeping through Europe, people noticed that four notorious thieves, who had previously been spice sellers, miraculously never contracted the highly infectious plague. When they were arrested the thieves offered to give the judge the recipe of their secret blend of herbs and oils in return for their freedom.

Over the centuries the recipe has evolved, but most versions still include Rosemary, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Lemon. As you can imagine, the aroma is wonderful. Some say it smells of Christmas whilst others compare it to the smell of Coca Cola!

IS IT JUST AN OLD WIVES TALE?

But there is much more to this magical essential oil blend than an old legend. If you look at the benefits of these oils then it makes sense that people would used it for medicinal reasons.

And there has been a few studies to investigate if this blend lives up to the claims. They show that these oils help reduce bacteria in the air when diffused in a room and their antimicrobial qualities have been shown to help when there has been antibiotic-resistant infections.

If you look at the oils individually;

Lemon is known to have antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial properties.It has long been used in medicine both for its aroma which reduces stress and its cleansing and protective effects on the body. It has been found to aid wound healing and helping to defend the body against harmful pathogens. Some research says it promotes detoxification through the blood and liver.

Cinnamon has a calming effect to the senses. It's thought to help conditions like dry skin, acne, rashes, and infections. Used to enhance circulation which helps revive skin tone, reduce inflammation. Also said to aid the elimination of some viruses, boost immunity and facilitate pain relief.

Clove buds have been used in the past to help skin conditions like acne and pimples and to treat acne scars. They have antibacterial and antifungal properties and have been used as a natural antiseptic in old recipes. Calms irritated skin and helps to reduce redness, pigmentation and puffiness.

Eucalyptus oil has antibacterial properties and can help cleanse the epidermis, clearing the pores of harmful impurities. It has also been shown to treat eczema and acne flare-ups and similar skin conditions. Promotes wound healing and provides pain relief for minor cuts and scrapes.

Rosemary has powerful anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that are useful in skin care. It can soothe skin inflammation on rashes, breakouts, and recurring skin conditions like dryness and itchy patches.It promotes circulation and cell renewal.
